The Ordinary

The Ordinary. Honestly, I'm so late to the game but this brand is a serious game changer for skincare.

Do you ever find yourself looking for a product but then actually gasp at just how pricey it is?! £100 for a teeny tiny bottle of face serum? Nah. I'm good, ta.

Say hello to The Ordinary. This beauty brand is the brainchild of Brandon Truaxe (who is also the founder of Deciem - whose repoitore of beauty lines include NIOD, and the Chemistry Brand)

Truaxe believes beauty should be affordable for everyone.

The Ordinary price range is low, but the quality is far from. The idea is that the range (apart from the serum 'The Buffet') has one or two main ingredients which are proven to work but are normally wayyyy overpriced.

“There is nothing "luxurious" or "educated" about overpaying for commodity, no matter how effective that commodity is. Skincare is not like fragrance or fashion––it's functional and it's not about telling stories."- Brandon Truaxe

Now that was something I could believe in.

I love hearing about the latest hype product - and I had to get my hands on The Ordinary, pronto.

I picked up The Buffet, Advanced Retinoid 2% and Natural Moisterising Factors + HA.

So here is my regime: I start with two drops of The Buffet, a complex mix of peptides. Here is the blurb from The Ordinary's website:

'This formula combines a comprehensive array of studied technologies to target multiple signs of ageing at once. The technologies are Matrixyl 3,000 peptide complex (with palmitoyl-pentapeptide 35), Matrixyl Synthe'6 peptide complex (with palmitoyl tripeptide-38), Syn-Ake peptide complex (with dipeptide diaminobutyroyl benzylamide diacetate), Relistase peptide complex (with acetylarginyltryptophyl diphenylglycine), Argirelox peptide complex (with acetyl hexapeptide-8, pentapeptide-18), Probiotic complex (with lactococcus lactis lysate), in a base of 11 skin-friendly amino acids and multiple hyaluronic acid complexes. The total concentration of these technologies in the formula by weight is 25.1%.'

As soon as I rub it into my skin, it feels quite 'thin' in consistency - it glides over the skin like water, which leaves a fresh and hydrating feeling.

After The Buffet, I drop two drops of the Advanced Retinoid.

'This formulation combines two forms of next-generation retinoid actives in a combined concentration of 2% by weight:

These two actives are:

a) Solubilized Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate is a highly-advanced form of retinoid which is, in fact, a non-prescription ester of all-trans direct retinoic acid that offers a multi-fold better effect against signs of ageing than retinol, retinyl palmitate and nearly all other forms of non-prescription retinoid;

b) a sustained-delivery form of pure retinol in a protective capsule system which supports both the delivery and the effect of Solubilized Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate.

Both forms of retinoid used avoid the irritation associated with retinoid (including retinol) use while delivering better visible results against signs of ageing.'

Now, I put this on only at night, after I've left The Buffet sink in for a few minutes. I find that the smell is quite mild and it has a slight medicinal smell. However, in the first two weeks I was using it I did notice that I broke out in some areas where I had applied the serum. I've heard this is a common problem and that you can experience breakouts after you start using retionoids. I stuck with this for two weeks daily and I didn't have any more breakouts which is a good sign - just remember to give it some time to settle in.

To finish off? Moisture.

To finish off, I apply a good layer of moisturiser.

'This formula offers non-greasy hydration that acts as a direct topical supplement of impaired NMF components. It contains 11 amino acids, phospholipids, alpha/beta/gamma fatty acids, triglycerides, sterols and sterol esters, glycerin, ceramide precursors, urea, saccharides, sodium PCA and hyaluronic acid. It offers immediate hydration and lasting results with continued use.'

All for the price of £5? An utter bargain.

It's been about 4 weeks since I've started my new regime and my skin is noticeably more smoother, hydrated and I have fallen head over heels for this new line. Now I'm just waiting to see which serum I want to buy next...
